Clarence Flour Mill - Hull - November 2008

After a couple of disappointing failed attempts at explores earlier in the day Rich and myself pretty much decided our day out in Hull would end up looking at closed down pubs and rusty ships. Expectations of another fail were high when we pulled up to Clarence Flour Mill, imagine our very pleasant surprise when we realised access was on! This is one beast of a mill and in pretty good condition considering it has been closed since early 2006, there's still loads of flour covering many of the floors in the 5 storey mill.

The mill and ajoining silo were built in 1952, replacing the mill that had been there 1891, but bombed and destroyed by Jerry in May 1941. The mill is full of belts, pulleys and all sorts of line shafting type machinery, with the various procssing machine largely being constructed from wood, pretty amazing stuff. The problem with this system was that if one machine broke down the whole lot had to be standing idle whilst the problem was fixed - no way to make money. Sadly to refurbish the factory would have cost up to one gazillion pounds so the old girl was closed down.
