Late afternoon on the 14th May a few of us set out to visit Mount St Mary's ("the famine church") which was built in 1857 and closed in 1989. At that point there were not many reports posted on the place and we (sqwasher and I) were looking forward to seeing it for ourselves. We were not disappointed! From the outside the Catholic Church was dark, gloomy and trussed up in scaffolding ready for work to start on the part conversion / part demolition but once inside the daylight shone through the various windows and lit up its beauty. Even though the place is home to a large number of pigeons the place was so photogenic that I found it difficult to move on to the Presbytery and then leave before it got too dark.
We all had a great visit. I'm sorry it's taken so long to post this. Here are some of my pics.

Great set of pictures Freebird, I love the stone cross amougst the flaky paint - a metaphor for organized religion if ever i saw one...this place is massively photogenic...much like myself!

Really good. I like the way you have photographed some of the damaged parts to the church, like the roof and the floor. Not seen that before. Awesome stairs shot in the presbytery. Did you go up?

Thanks both of you. The stairs were really bad we didn't go up but we went downstairs as they were slightly better. We did run out of time though or we might have been tempted to go up. Smile

There's nothing too interesting up stairs (nor downstairs for that matter). Downstairs had been COMPLETELY trashed, although the kitchen still had some original stuff in. Upstairs was.. nothing really. Not worth the risk of the stairs collapsing (as one of the boards did for me)
